What began as voluntary disclosure across a handful of regions is now binding, verified and tightening, with governments and major buyers both asking industry for the same numbers. Every turn asks for carbon at a finer resolution than the last.

The first industrial carbon markets

The EU Emissions Trading System launches in 2005 covering power, iron and steel, cement, refining, glass, ceramics and paper. India follows in 2012 with tradable energy-saving certificates against specific energy consumption targets for 478 plants, and China opens the first of seven regional pilot markets in 2013.
